Some time ago, I reported on the workshops that Luke Ward offers on Patreon. He offers two different series, one for beginners and a second for advanced players. He publishes a workshop twice a month. So far, he has devoted himself to various topics related to accompanying tunes. Mainly accompaniment in different keys.
Now he has turned his attention to accompanying the song “The Blacksmith” in Andy Irvine's version. He sticks pretty closely to the version Andy plays live. He shows the intro and the accompaniment for the verses. Of course, there is also tablature for it.
So if you've been hesitating to sign up, now there's one more important reason to do so. It's worth it!
What a gem! I don't think there a many video recordings of Andy from that time. Here's one hour of Andy solo and with Kevin Burke and Mícheál Ó Domhnaill. Once again thanks to AndyFanblock page on YouTube who collects videos of Andy.
Last weekend I had the pleasure to see Andy Irvine live in Germany. He was in a fantastic mood and really enjoyed the nice audience. This is the first set he played there.
Unfortunately the camera made two files of the recording near the end of the song. Here's the second part of the set.
Found this now 10 years old Video on my hard disk. I filmed it at a concert in a small village in Northern Germany. The concert was sold out and I had bought no ticket in advance. Luckily they opened up the room and let me and some more people in. Btw. I drove more than 700 km to see Andy there, well, to be honest, I also wanted to visit my sister who lives there ;-)
What a wonderful song by Andy Irvine. From his album "Rainy Sundays, Windy Dreams" released in the 70s.
Here's a version from the Celebrating of the 40th anniversary of the Paul Brady/Andy Irvine album. Andy Irvine, Paul Brady, Donal Lunny, Kevin Burke, Vicar Street Dublin. 21 May 2017
Just found this really old post of mine. The video link did not work anymore. The link to my tab either. So here is the re-post, 12 years after the first one. Now I added the tab on the page.
I'm playing my old Stevens Bouzouki here, trying to play the intro of West coast of Clare, one of the best songs by Andy Irvine. I tried to copy the arragement he once played live on his bass bouzouki. I restringed my zouk for this to achieve that bass bouzouki sound.
Here's the tab for this intro, I made it with Tabledit
Some time ago I tried to figure out the chords to the song The girl I left behind as Andy plays it. Unfortunately Tabledit did not recognize the names of the chords correctly. But nevertheless, it's the fingering that counts. The song starts in the video at 0:29 min.
On Nov, 10th 2018 Andy played at Club Kuckucksei in Nürtingen. I'm not sure if it was the fourth of fifth time he played there. Another fantastic evening of great songs and stories. I posted my video to youtube and hope you will enjoy it.

This was the first concert from Andy I had the chance to film. At first I didn't dare to take out my camcorder, but during the break a friend of mine who knows Andy asked him for permission. He also asked him to play "Baneasa's Green Grass" for me. I was overwhelmed when Andy dedicated the song to me.
Although Andy played together with Rens van der Zalm I only filmed Andy, because I hoped to have the chance to figure out some bits of his playing. Well, more than 10 years passed and I am still struggling with it.
Somebody asked for "West Coast Of Clare" this evening. I think, Andy hadn't played this song for ages. He had some problems with his Bass Bouzouki. But the next shows I saw him this song was on his playlist.
Another great concert I had the chance to put on video. This one is from a Tour Andy made with and Rens van der Zalm in 2004. Enjoy!

This is a concert, Andy gave in Germany in October 2006. I drove nearly 4 hours to see him there. As the location is a bit hidden and with no Navigation System at that time I had lots of trouble to get there. When I finally arrived the concert had just begun. Luckily I found a free seat in the third row. More luckily the seat was on the left of the stage so I had a good angle for filming. You have a good view of his left hand.
I just came across this old video and thought it might be a good idea to share this one with you. So enjoy! Unfortunately I was too lazy to create a Tracklist. So feel free to post it in the comments ;-)
Andy Irvine at Mighty Fine Guitars, Lafayette, CA, September 2012.
A Vortex Production, filmed and edited by Jeff Peach. A full concert. Many thanks to "ThreeTime Through" who posted the videos.
