Fernando Barroso - Accompanying in 4/4 - Tam Lin/The Glasgow Reel

In this video Fernando shows several possibilities to accompany the Reel Tam Lin. It's all about the right hand. Very interesting video! He starts with accents in different places and moves on to things like dampening and arpeggio.

By the way, check out his album on spotify and his channel on youtube.

Fernando Barroso - Right Hand Technique

Unfortunately this video is in Spanish. The Translation by youtube doesn't help a lot to understand the words. Nevertheless you can understand a lot just by watching and repeating. Fernando's videos are something special and something you won't find anywhere else.

Eamon Coughlan - Basic Reel picking patterns

Another video I found on youtube. Eamon shows some basic picking patterns for accompanying reels. He promised to post some more videos about jigs and waltzes in the near future, so maybe it is a good idea to subscribe to his channel.

Fernando Barroso - Tips for playing Polkas

Fernando Barroso published a new video, this time  tips for accompanying polkas. He concentrates on the right hand, so it is the rhythm. Have a watch, this is really helpful and thought out.

And right now he uploaded a video about Polka and PasoDoble melody playing!

A groovy Jig Rhythm pattern

This is a groovy Jig Rhythm pattern. Found it on the CD Wooden Flute Obsession 2 Disk 2 on the tune Fly on the porter. Sorry, key signature is wrong, has to be G for D Mixolydian.

Link to the tune on thesession.org:

Finale Guitar - How to play strummed triplets in slip jigs

Nye Farley talks about strumming triplets in slip jigs. Of course this one is made for guitar, but can easily be translated for bouzouki. If you like it look for more videos of Finale Guitar on youtube. Nye also has published a good book on accompanying irish tunes on guitar with a lot of ideas you also can use for bouzouki.

Here's his youtube channel:

Matt Heaton - Workshop Right hand technique

Matt offers his first bouzouki tutorial. This one is about right hand technique. In this way he shares my opinion about accompanying tunes on the bouzouki. It sounds better if the bouzouki is played different from a guitar.

The Heaton's youtube-channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UC2jJahEPFofYItznRtMNCaQ

And don't forget to tune in to the Heaton's slow session on youtube every Saturday, and maybe donate some money to them if you have something spare:  PayPal button -- https://tinyurl.com/wqofe4b

Shane McGowan - Rhythm Tutorial - Jigs and Reels

South Sligo SummerSchool gave us two tutorials with Shane McGowan. He's one fine guitar player and has worked with so many famous musicians. I saw him several time live and I think his style is very lively. As it is all about rhythm it should be of interest to bouzouki players as well.

The first Workshop deals with jigs:

The second Workshop deals with Reels:

Folk Friend - Learn to strum Irish/Scottish Hornpipes and Reels

Nye Farley (Folk Friend) has published a new instruction video for guitarists. As he explains some strumming patterns it is interesting for bouzouki players also. In this video he focuses on Hornpipes. He shows a straight and a swung pattern.

If you don't know him already check him out on youtube. There are some interesting videos to be found on his channel.

On his website you can find some tips for practicing:

You might also have a look at his book which I really like:

Dennis Cahill Style - Tutorial Video by Folk Friend - Nye Farley

Today Nye Farley published a video in which he explains a bit the style of Dennis Cahill. It's a video for Guitar, but maybe some of the parts could be interesting for bouzouki players as well. Example tune is approx. 107 BPM.

I tried to find chords for bouzouki which might be suitable for this style. Here is my chord sheet, G-Drone on the Bass String:

A selection of strumming patterns - Nye Farley

Nye Farley (Folk Friend) offers a series called Folky Fridays where he talks about several techniques for Irish Guitar. In No 3 he talks about different strumming patterns. So this might also be interesting for bouzouki.

The sound quality is really bad, but the content make it worth having a look at it.

Nye also has written a book which I can really recommend called Backing techniques for Celtic Traditional Music which is available on his website:

Eamon Doorley Style

I really don't remember where I got this video from. Probably I found it on youtube. So I don't know who this bouzouki playing guy is, but the tips are worth trying. As I did not know the original source I had to upload it to youtube by myself. If anyone knows the name of this guy please let me know in the comments.

Jig Rhythm lesson - Strumming Triplets

This one's for guitar, but as it is about right hand patterns it is useful for Zouk also. It is about strumming triplets in a Jig Rhythm. It takes some time to play it fluently, but it's worth the effort. By the way, Nye published a book about accompanying Irish Music. You can get it here:
